Caol Ila 8 - unpeated
9690 bottles. ABV 64.9%. RSP £33. From 1st fill Bourbon oak casks filled in 1998.
"In a blind tasting you might be way out, if guessing the age of this whisky by its aroma and soft flavour! Unusual; unpeated and concentrated, lively and sparkling. A fine apéritif."
Appearance: Bright pale gold.
Nose: Remarkably rounded for its age. Very fresh, with surprisingly little prickle and no smoke. Extremely soft and honeyed, then quickly sharp and pungent. Intensely acetic (nail varnish, acid
drops) with light green fruits behind (Muscat grapes, tinned pineapple and kiwi, lychees). Softens to travel sweets (lemon, barley sugar), then a suggestion of cappuccino coffee. Opens to new-mown grass; sappy, with tight oak and a little icing sugar. Water brings out sweet, coconut ice cream and light antiseptic notes, simplifying things overall.
Body: Light-bodied. Oily. Smooth.
Palate: Drinks remarkably easily straight. Fragrant shampoo, then mellows to fresh, juicy citrus fruits. Very sweet, with herbal notes underscored by eucalyptus. Crisp, but with a soft mid-palate. Oily and quite unctuous for a young whisky. Plenty of water calms things down. Sweetly fresh and easy to drink, the fruit still green-tinged (lychee and melon). Late on, a drier note of muesli.
Finish: Short, sweet and apéritif-lively. Notes of fennel and tarragon. Peppery.
